Goodwin University Kid Care Program Receives Nutmeg Foundation Grant

East Hartford, CT (04/23/2020) — Goodwin University has announced that it has been awarded a grant of $10,000 from the Nutmeg Foundation for its on-campus Kid Care program, which provides supplemental child care assistance for University students during class time. Employing the Reggio Emilia model of learning and a STEAM-focused curriculum, Kid Care offers children ages six months to 12 years the opportunity to explore math, science, reading, and technology while their parents or guardians are in class at the University.

The Nutmeg Foundation fosters the acquisition of knowledge and skills that enable organizations and the individuals they serve to achieve their goals. Priority is given to organizations that enhance personal growth, independence, and self-sufficiency.

Established in 2019, the Kid Care program faces an ever-increasing demand from Goodwin students. "My son's experience at Kid Care has been nothing short of a blessing," said one mother. "As a parent with a full-time job and trying to pursue a degree, finding child care is a difficult task. Kid Care provided a convenience to me as an evening student. I will be forever grateful for this opportunity to continue my education without the stress of not having child care."

Simplifying daily operations will allow teachers to streamline parent communications and spend more time focusing the children on healthy development and early learning. Part of the Nutmeg grant funds will be used for a software system that will effectively manage daily operations, attendance tracking, child portfolios, assessments, observations, and lesson planning. The funding will also facilitate access to Brain POP, an animated educational site covering an array of subjects, and 14 iPads.

"The benefits of the Nutmeg Foundation grant are really threefold," said Craig Drezek, Superintendent of Goodwin University Magnet Schools. "The children in Kid Care receive social and education enrichment. The parents and guardians can focus on their studies and complete their degrees without being distracted by child care concerns. And because this allows us to get more skilled professionals out into careers, Connecticut's workforce benefits as well."
